Discovering Your Inner Life

The Hero’s Journey is the ultimate call to adventure.

It is a journey that we all take at least once in our life, and many of us take several times.

Engaging in the journey is a choice. We often refuse the call because we are busy or don’t feel worthy, and sometimes we simply ignore difficult circumstances and hope the situation will go away.

The Hero’s Journey is significant because it tells us that the only way out is through. Going “through” a situation is the opposite of running away. It helps us get in touch with our real emotions, giving us an opportunity to heal wounds and address fears. It also gives us the chance to develop the great gift of resilience, which teaches us that we have the ability to deal with any situation.

The Stages of the Hero’s Journey: -The Ordinary World: The hero is in his/her everyday environment. Life pulls the hero in different directions, causing stress.

-The Call to Adventure: Something shakes up the hero’s situation and the hero must face the beginnings of change.

-Refusal of the Call: The hero tries to turn away from the adventure.

-Meeting with the Mentor: The hero comes across a mentor who offers training, equipment or advice that will help on the journey.

-Crossing the Threshold: The hero commits to leaving the Ordinary World and enters a new region or condition with unfamiliar rules and values.

-Tests, Allies, and Enemies: The hero is tested and has to evaluate allegiances.

-Approach: The hero and newfound allies prepare for the major challenge.

-The Ordeal: The hero confronts death or faces their greatest fear.

-The Reward: The hero takes possession of the treasure won by facing death.

-The Road Back: The hero is driven to complete the adventure.

-The Resurrection: The hero is tested again before being able to return home. Polarities that were once in conflict are resolved.

-Return with the Treasure: Transformation! The hero returns home bearing a treasure that has the power to transform the world just as the hero has been transformed.  Everyone’s Hero’s Journey looks different.

My journey was ignited by the death of my young husband, Tom. I was thrust into the unknown and went through the phases of the Hero’s Journey, ending with Transformation. There have been other Hero’s Journeys in my life, but none as distinct as this one.

It’s easy to get trapped by negative thoughts and feelings when faced with a Hero’s Journey. It is important to acknowledge your negative feelings, become aware of the wounds they touch, and make a conscious effort to heal that part of yourself. Refusing the Hero’s Journey keeps you in the ordinary  world without the gift of transformation. The Hero’s Journey is an opportunity to develop your trust in a Higher Power, cultivate resilience, and find new ways of being in the world.
